Even the Colonial Zone is not car-free, it has designated pedestrian zones and doesn’t suffer from the crazy traffic congestions you experience in the rest of Santo Domingo. Its dimensions are 1×1 kilometers, so you hardly walk more than 15 minutes from one end to the other. The Zona Colonial just has a size of around 0.4 square miles, which means that everything is walkable. The Colonial Zone is part of the first one, which is located on the right bank of the Ozama River. Officially, Santo Domingo consists of two cities, Santo Domingo de Guzman and Santo Domingo Este. The colonial district is protected by water from two sides, the Ozama River to the east and the Caribbean Sea to the west. The Zona Colonial is located in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.
